Red-hot Yellowjackets topple Wolverines
Dave Cresap’s Perham Yellowjackets warmed up for post-season action March 1 by routing Wadena-Deer Creek 87-33 on the WDC court.
The Yellowjackets shot the lights out by hitting on 28 of 50 field-goal attempts for a strong 56 percent. The Yellowjackets made 13 of their 27 treys for a 48 percent clip and went 18 of 19 at the foul stripe for a whopping 95 percent average.
Eli Beachy led the Perham attack with 21 points. Also scoring in double figures were Jake Anderson and Jordan Hein with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Matt Laughin was high-point man for the Wolverines with 13. The Wolverines converted on 12 of their 32 floor shots and went seven of 11 from the line. Laughlin dropped in both of WDC’s 3-pointers.
The Wolverines hurt themselves with 25 turnovers. The Yellowjackets coughed up the ball 11 times.
Perham ended the regular season with a 19-7 record, and the Wolverines ended the year at 5-20.
Hawley and Crosby-Ironton drew the top seeds in the Section 8AA tournament rankings. Hawley picked up a first-round game Feb. 28 with WDC at Hawley. Ranked behind the Nuggets in the south half of the section are Perham (2), Pelican Rapids (3), Barnesville (4), Breckenridge (5), Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (6), Frazee (7) and WDC (8).
Crosby-Ironton drew a first-round bye. Ranked behind the Rangers are Warroad (2), Crookston (3), Pequot Lakes (4), Park Rapids (5), Bagley (6) and Roseau (7).
The quarterfinals will be held Saturday at Concordia College in Moorhead and Bemidji State. The semifinals are slated for Tuesday at Concordia and Bemidji State. The Section 8AA title game will be held 6:30 p.m. Friday at Concordia.
