Raiders saddle Tigers with 4-2 setback
The Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale Raiders controlled the weather and the scoreboard Thursday as they opened their 2012 season early with a 4-2 victory over the Nevis Tigers.
Thursday's prep opener at Anderson Field in Verndale was moved up by mutual agreement from its originally scheduled date of May 4.
Dallas Ehrmantraut racked up the mound win with help from Preston Riewer in the fifth and Nick Brown in the seventh. Ehrmantraut scattered three walks and one over his four frames while striking out five. Riewer did a good job of long relief fanning two of the six batters he faced. Brown picked up the save.
Brett Byer was hung with the loss.
The Raiders found themselves trailing 1-0 until the bottom of the third when Travis Eckel started a two-run rally with a base hit. After Ehrmantraut walked and Riewer beat out a bunt to load the sacks, Daryn Kirscht came through with a two-run single.
A two-out base hit by Eric Blaha and two Nevis errors led to two more BHV runs in the fourth.
The Raiders took a big hit on graduation night last year when they lost seven of their nine 2011 starters. Riewer had a lot of questions when he opened practice in March. He liked the fact that his team gave up just four walks and committed only two errors in their first game.
"We need to hit the ball better but if we continue to pitch and play defense like we did we will be able to compete with most of our opponents all season," Riewer said.
