Raiders open season with sweep
Steve Riewer's return to the high school coaching ranks could not have gone better for the Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale skipper as his Raiders swept a Park Region Conference doubleheader from Pillager Tuesday at Verndale.
The Raiders, who were playing their first baseball games together after combining their programs in the off-season, edged the Huskies 6-5 in the opener when a 9-3-2 play by Cody Yungbauer, Ethan Bakken and Jared Hoemberg nailed a sliding Conner Uselman at the plate to end the game.
Dustin Motschenbacher came on in the fifth to gain the save.
Hoemberg and Matt Fretham supplied the fireworks for BHV with two hits and two RBIs apiece.
Hunstad, Adam Obermiller, Dylan Badger and Justin Hummel all banged out two hits as Pillager came up with 12 safeties.
Yungbauer came up with the mound win in relief of Bakken.
The Raiders turned three double plays in winning the second game 6-4.
The Huskies knocked Hoemberg out in the first frame and Riewer brought in Ehrmantraut who lasted until the seventh when Nick Jasmer took over to earn a save.
Hoemberg's troubles on the mound did not extend to the plate as the BHV slugger doubled, homered and drove in three runs. Bakken had three hits and two ribbies.
Doss, Jordan Hunstad and Ries Wikman all collected two hits in the loss.
The Raiders showed Riewer a lot more than he had hoped for in view of the fact that it was one of their first times outdoors.
"We went out and played really well," Riewer said in praising his team. "I was excited that our pitchers threw strikes."
