Raiders come up short in Section 6A
Autumn Roberts singled in Alexis Rankka with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning May 30 as the New York Mills Eagles edged Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale 8-7 to earn a trip to the Class A state softball tournament.
The Eagles led 7-3 after the second inning of Game 2 but the Raiders managed to tie the game at 7-all in the top of the sixth when Jordyn Glenz led off with a double, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a base hit by Hannah VanHale. After Julie Iliff put down a sacrifice bunt and Sarah Moenkedick reached on a fielder’s choice, VanHale was tagged out at home on a double steal. Elyssa Kern lined out to end the winning.
BHV’s Teresa Moenkedick singled in the top of the seventh to put the go-ahead run on base with one out. Sydney Weniger and Tiffany Wangerin were retired to end the threat.
Rankka reached in the seventh on a fielder’s choice and scored on Roberts’ two-out single.
Teresa Moenkedick drove in two runs for the Raiders. Glenz scored twice. Sarah Moenkedick and Kirsten Korfe both went 2-for-4.
EmaLeigh and Autumn Roberts combined for three runs, three hits and four RBIs in the victory. Mckenna Roberts scored twice.
The Eagles set up the second game of the Section 6A championship series with a convincing 12-0 victory in the day’s first game. Autumn Roberts fired a two-hitter in the five-inning win. Roberts walked two and fanned five. The Mills standout gave up singles to Elyssa Kern and Tiffany Wangerin.
EmaLeigh Roberts, Brooklyn Frost, Amy Nebosis and Alexis Rankka all had two hits for the Eagles. Roberts also scored three times and drove in two.
Game 1 saw the Eagles break on top 5-0 after two frames and put the game out of reach in the fourth with a seven-run uprising.
The surprising Raiders went into the championship series with a 4-0 tournament record after ending the regular season with a 5-12 mark. The Raiders defeated Pillager, Ashby, Brandon-Evansville and Frazee to earn their shot against New York Mills.
