Public health director retiring
After 29 years of service with Wadena County, Public Health Director Karen Nelson gave a tearful resignation to the Wadena County Board of Commissioners. After 46 years of working in Public Health, Nelson plans to retire. The board unanimously approved, with regret, Nelson's resignation will be effective May 31, 2011.
Highway department reports six bridges in bad shape
Assistant Highway Engineer Jeff Adolphson gave a presentation of the Wadena County 2010 Bridge Inspection Report. Six bridges have been found to be structurally deficient and one was found to be hydraulically deficient. The bridges found to be deficient are scheduled for repair. Highway Engineer Ryan Odden requested permission to advertise for bids for two bridge projects and two road projects. His request was approved. Quotes for materials for insulation and roof replacement of the Menahga Shop and Menahga Salt Shed were obtained. Odden recommended low quote from Central Building Supply for both projects. The board approved Odden's recommendations.
Fairground rebuilding project update
Highway Engineer Ryan Odden presented a Fairgrounds Rebuilding Committee update to the board. Several recommendations for short and long range plans were discussed, including contracting with University of Minnesota Center for Rural Development to design a master plan for reconstruction of the fairgrounds. The board discussed at length plans and financial concerns. However, no decisions were made at that time.
Sheriff's department receives $5,000 donation
Wadena County Sheriff Mike Carr advised the Board that a donation of $5,000 was received from Wal-Mart, as a part of its employee volunteer program, relating to last year's tornado. Carr said he wants to use the donation to equip one of its trailers to be used as a Mobile Emergency Operations Center. The board unanimously approved acceptance of the donation and designating the funds to be used for the Mobile EOC.

Commissioners approved 2011 tobacco licenses for Orton's Menahga Citgo, Shell Sport and Bait, Huntersville Outpost, Chuck's Country Foods, Blueberry Pines Golf Club and Menahga C-Store.
Approved a resolution delegating legal signing authority for HSEM Grant Agreements to auditor/treasurer or board chair.
Approved moving forward with architecture plans for the County Recorder's Office.
A correction to the Feb. 1 Board Meeting report: a contract with Gibson Consulting was not approved.
