The Wadena County Pride Auction Committee awarded two $300 scholarships at the Wadena County Fair this year. Applicants were 4-H members enrolled in a livestock project. They were required to write an essay about what being in a Livestock Project in 4-H has taught them. Both of the recipients are long time 4-H members.

Katelyn Huttunen is a member of Blowers/Rockwood 4-H club. She is the daughter of Gordie and Kelly Huttunen and is attending Moorhead State majoring in physical therapy.

Madigan Cochran is a member of West Jolly Jets 4-H club. She is the daughter of Ray and Lisa Cochran and is attending South Dakota School of Mines and Technology majoring in geology.

The Wadena County Pride Auction has been held annually for the last 21 years. A pride auction is an auction at which members of the community bid on an animal as the 4-H members show their animal in the auction ring. Instead of bidding to buy the animal, people will be bidding to provide premium money for the 4-H exhibitor, thus providing the exhibitors with an incentive to exhibit and show their animal. The animals are not for sale.

The auction is open to Wadena County 4-H members enrolled in a production livestock project and exhibit at the county fair. Each year the committee asks all interested parents, businesses, professionals and industrial people, along with civic and business organizations to help support the auction. Everyone assisting with the auction (auctioneer, clerks, steering committee, etc.) donate their services to the 4-H program.
