Post 171 tops Sebeka-Menahga nine
Jake Krause went 3-for-4, stole two bases and scored a run Monday as the Wadena Post 171 squad defeated Sebeka-Menahga 5-3.
“Jake is a guy that goes up to the plate ready to hit,” said Wadena Legion Coach Kevin Tumberg. “What makes him so unique is that he will go after that first pitch almost every at-bat, but yet he is very patient at the plate. If he doesn't get that first pitch fastball, he will gladly wait a couple pitches until he does get it. The mistake a lot of pitchers have made to him this summer is that they don't try and pitch around him.. They go right after him and try to overpower Jake, but that is something very few pitchers are able to do.”
Krause has been on fire at the plate since the first game of the 2013 spring high school baseball season. He was also a hitting standout for the Wadena-Deer Creek Shockers in their season opener May 5 against Pelican Rapids. His strong hitting showed up early in the Legion season when he triggered a doubleheader sweep of Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale May 10 by going 5-for-7 and driving in six RBIs.
“A lot of the credit for his success at the plate goes to the set up batters in front of him,” Tumberg said. “When there are runners on base it forces the pitcher to not have 100 per cent focus on Krause and when that ‘mistake’ pitch comes...he doesn't miss.”
Wyatt Weber went 2-for-3 at the plate for Post 171 and scored twice. Mitchell Swanson scored once and cracked out two singles. Jake Dykhoff went 2-for-2 with one RBI.
Sam Tellers and Paul Funk each collected one hit and one RBI in the loss.
Matt Laughlin went the distance for Post 171. The right-hander scattered five hits while walking three and fanning three. Taylor Carlson was hung with the loss.
Post 171 hosts Staples-Motley Monday and Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale Wednesday traveling to Blackduck Friday. All games will begin at 5:30 p.m.
