Pirates win Park Region Conference title; Moenkedick breaks school scoring record

Art Schluttner's Verndale cagers won their first Park Region Conference title, and Teresa Moenkedick broke the school scoring record Tuesday night as the Pirates topped New York Mills 72-49.

The Pirates wrapped up the Park Region Conference championship with their 11th win in the last 12 games. The Pirates finished their PRC season with a 9-3 mark and improved their season record to 18-6. The last time Verndale won a conference title was in 1978 when they claimed the Lakes Region crown.

Moenkedick became Verndale's all-time leading scorer with 28 tallies. The Verndale senior ran her career scoring total to 1,510 points. The record of 1,492 was set in 1969 by Dick Finck.

Elyssa Kern netted 11 points and Jordyn Glenz chipped in with 10. Nine players contributed points to Verndale's scoring.

Lydia Rutten and EmaLeigh Roberts paced the Eagles with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

The Eagles gave the Pirates trouble in the first half and trailed by just two, 38-36, at the midway point. The Pirates held the Eagles to just 13 points in the second half.

The loss dropped the Eagles to 3-9 in the conference and 8-13 overall.

The Section 5A playoffs open Monday.

Marissa Evans tallied 26 points Monday as the Bulldogs stopped Verndale's 10-game win streak on the Verndale court.

The Bulldogs rallied from a 24-14 halftime deficit.

Teresa Moenkedick scored 17 points for the Pirates and Elyssa Kern contributed 12.

Teresa Moenkedick pumped in 26 as the Pirates buried Pillager Feb. 15 for their 10th straight win.

The victory clinched a share of the Park Region Conference title for the Pirates, who improved to 8-3 in the conference and 17-5 overall.

Jordyn Glenz and Elyssa Kern joined Moenkedick in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Nine Verndale players contributed scoring in the win.

Autumn Borders led the Huskies with 10 points.
