Pirates trounce Arrows to set up battle of unbeatens
The Verndale Pirates warmed up for a Friday battle with Class Nine-man defending champ Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley last Saturday by crushing Ashby 62-8 in a Homecoming game at Mahlen Field.
The Pirates will match unbeaten records with Class Nine-man’s No. 1-rated club at 7 p.m. Friday in Verndale. The meeting will be the first between the two clubs since 2010 when the Wolverines topped Verndale 20-12. The Wolverines will bring a 17-game winning streak into Friday’s contest.
The offensive and defensive numbers for the two Pheasant Conference clubs are almost identical this year. The Pirates have scored 246 points and allowed 47 in their first five games. The Wolverines had scored 240 points and allowed 44.
The Pirates spread the scoring around in Saturday’s victory over the Arrows. After scoring 38 of the team’s game points Sept. 20 in a 56-8 victory over Hillcrest, Verndale quarterback Dillon Card punched in one rushing touchdown and tossed two scoring aerials. Card rushed 14 times for 82 yards and hit on six of his eight throws for 123 yards.
The Pirates put five touchdowns and one safety on the board before the Arrows were able to score. Card scored Verndale’s first TD on a two-yard run and the Pirates led 8-0 after one quarter. Andy Bounds ran in the second Verndale TD from eight yards out to start a 26-point surge. Card found Colter Ehrmantraut for a 51-yard scoring aerial and after a safety, Card found Will Kramer open for a 42-yard touchdown.
The Arrows held the Pirates to one third quarter touchdown. Ehrmantraut scored on a 25-yard run to build Verndale’s lead to 40-0.
Ashb]y’s Gage Olson countered with a one-yard run and Zach Barry teamed up with Blake Ohren for a two-point conversion.
The Pirates went back to work in the fourth quarter with Bounds catching an 11-yard scoring pass from Kramer, Marshall Willis scoring on a 24-yard run and Anthony Kern scoring from one-yard out.
Dakota Finck hit the century mark in rushing on 14 attempts. Bounds and Ehrmantraut combined for 80 rushing yards. Kramer caught three balls for 59 yards.
Bounds was Verndale’s top tackler with 11 stops. James Kveton logged 10 tackles. Ehrmantraut and Marcos Gomez both made eight stops. Eric Blaha had two of Verndale’s five sacks and one fumble recovery.
Barry was Ashby’s top gainer with six catches for 51 yards. Hunter Fick rushed 16 times for 40 yards.
