Pirates topple Henning in PRC tilt

Teresa Moenkedick came up with 26 points and Jordy Schluttner grabbed 14 rebounds Tuesday night as the Verndale Pirates continued their climb toward the .500 mark with a 43-40 win at Henning.

Casey Haugdahl and Megan Richter led the Hornets with 14 and 10 points respectively.

Both clubs had only had four players in the scoring column.

The win gave the Pirates a 4-5 record in the Park Region Conference and improved Art Schluttner's club to 8-10 overall. The Hornets lost to a PRC foe for just the second time this season in eight matchups and saw their overall record slide to 10-6.

Betsey Hjelseth poured in 20 points Friday as the Tigers clawed the Pirates.

The Tigers racked up an impressive 44-28 lead in the first half against the Pirates who were coming off a tough 53-44 loss to Park Region Conference foe Bertha-Hewitt on Thursday night.

Hjelseth was backed up by Riley Hanson's 16 tallies and Megan Norby's 15 points.

Teresa Moenkedick was the only Verndale cager to reach double figures scoring 16 points.

The victory gave the Tigers an 11-6 season mark and a 6-3 record in January.

Teresa Moenkedick scored 18 points, but the Verndale Pirates had their two-game winning streak snapped by a 53-44 Park Region Conference loss to the Bertha-Hewitt Bears.

Jordyn Glenz added 12 for the Pirates, who fell to 7-9 overall.
