Pirates top WCA before falling to top-seeded Pillager
Dan Johnson's Verndale Pirates rolled past West Central Area 12-2 in West Sub-Section 6A play Tuesday, but proved no match for top-seed Pillager in a season-ending 8-3 setback.
Sydney Weniger went 2-for-3 and drove in four runs ,as the eighth-ranked Pirates tounced the ninth-ranked Knights in their pigtail game Tuesday at Pillager.
Weniger was backed up by Elyssa Kern, who went 2-for-4, scored twice and drove in one run. Jordy Schluttner also came through with two RBIs.
Kirstin Korfe had a strong outing on the mound as she held the rebuilding WCA club to just two hits over the five-inning game. Korfe fanned two and walked two.
The Pirates then ran into Pillager's Shayla Hunstad in the second round and managed just three hits off the Pillager ace. Hunstad did not walk a batter and did not allow an earned run.
Korfe and Jordyn Glenz combined four hits in the loss. Glenz also drove in two runs.
Korfe fanned six in suffering the loss.
Caroline Razinski was 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI in the victory.
The Pirates ended their season with a 4-17 record.
