With 13 of 14 starters back in the fold, head coach Steve Techam and his Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale wrestlers have set some lofty goals this season.

Techam, who was there at the start of the BHV wrestling program and coached wrestling for 34 years, has stepped up to fill the void left by the resignation of Mike Barthel. Techam will serve as an interim head coach until another head coach is found.

Techam sees his Raiders competing for Park Region Conference honors with New York Mills. He also feels the Raiders have a shot at a Section 6A team title along with defending champ Barnesville and perennial powerhouse Border West. The Raiders battled their way into the semifinal round of the section team tournament last year before bowing to Barnesville. They still managed to qualify three of their wrestlers, Hunter Truax, Dillon Card and Anthony Kern, for state. Card finished his season by placing fifth in the 182-pound bracket at state with a 48-5 record. Truax represented the Raiders at heavyweight and posted a 23-10 season mark. Kern wrestled at state as a 106-pounder and ended the season with a 29-16 record.

Seniors on this year’s squad include Dalton Baker, Andrew Cihlar, Justin Gordon, Nick Bennett, John French, Andy Bounds and Dakota Finck.

In addition to Card and Kern, juniors on the team include Hayden Truax, Marshall Willis, Anthony Kern, Diego Rodriguez,Austin Ortiz, Brady Baker and Mathilde Evenson.

Charlton Nienaber, Jannis Jaeck, Jared Hall, Levi Bruce and Nick Peterson round out the sophomore group.

Freshman grapplers will be Ethan Kimber, Cameron Powell, Zach Waln and Tyler Olston.

Eighth-graders out include Braydon Bertram, Matt Powers, Holton Truax and Josh Bounds.

Seventh graders vying for mat time will be Dominick Shesta, Devin Dean, Zack Bennett, Quinn Kern, Thomas Richter and Jarret Kveton.
