Mike Mahlen's Verndale Pirates made the most of an extra week of practice Friday as they clubbed E.C.H.O. Charter 60-0 in their season opener.

The Pirates held the Rockets to just 73 yards on the ground and 12 through the air for a total of 85.

Mahlen's club racked up 480 yards of offense with Andy Bounds gaining 170 yards on just seven carries and scoring three touchdowns. Bounds scored on runs of seven, 65 and 58 yards.

Dallas Ehrmantraut also cashed in three times by catching TD aerials of 34

and 14 yards from freshman quarterback Dillon Card Card and breaking off a 29-yard scoring run of his own. Ehrmantraut finished the game with five catches for 87 yards and two carries for 36 yards.

Card connected on nine of 13 passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns.

Cory Uselman and Dakota Finck added touchdowns of three and 58 yards.

Colton Moyer was Verndale's top tackler with eight stops. Bounds joined Dan Fisher, James Kveton and Cory Uselman with seven tackles. Bounds also had two of Verndale's five fumble recoveries.

"We're very young but I was satisfied with the way we played," Mahlen said.
