Pirates open with 36-32 win over Hancock
Dillon Card rushed for three touchdowns and passed for one as the Verndale Pirates overpowered a pass-happy Hancock crew 36-32 in their season opener.
Verndale's sophomore quarterback gained 171 yards on 29 carries and hit paydirt on runs of one, four and six yards. Card, who is starting his second season as Verndale's varsity quarterback, was seven of 21 through the air for 97 yards. Card hooked up with Dallas Ehrmantraut for a 19-yard scoring strike but spread his passes around to four receivers. Marcos Gomez caught two balls for 29 yards, James Kveton grabbed two for 26 and Ehrmantraut pulled in two for 20. Josh Gilb nabbed one Card aerial for a 20-yard gainer.
Dakotah Finck rushed 19 times for 97 yards. Hancock's Jordan Miller caught four touchdown passes from Tyler Holleman, who was 20 of 38 for a whopping 321 yards. The two players combined for all of Hancock's game points. Miller caught 15 passes for 280 yards.
Ehrmantraut and Card combined for 24 stops on defense.
Dakotah Finck picked up 97 rushing yards on 19 attempts and scored Verndale's first TD on a 10-yard carry.
