Pirates move closer to unbeaten season
The Verndale Pirates made the most out of their longest road trip of the season Wednesday night as they racked up a 64-12 victory over Hancock.
Amos Schmidt scored four touchdowns, including one on a 73-yard kickoff return.
Matt Willis, Dustin Motschenbacher and Jacob Perius broke off scoring runs of 45, 61 and 43 yards for the Pirates.
Colby Schmidt hooked up with Nathan Wiese for a 37-yard touchdown.
The senior-dominated Owls pounced on a punt return fumble at the Verndale 30 in the first quarter and Brendan Foss caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Drew Schmidgall. Foss caught a 59-yard scoring aerial in the third quarter.
"It rained right from the start and it got pretty sloppy," Verndale head coach Mike Mahlen said. "There were a few turnovers both ways but I think we did a fairly good job. Our ground game did pretty well. They had some success passing against us. They had a receiver we couldn't cover."
The state-ranked Pirates will go for their second straight perfect regular season record Tuesday when they host Chokio-Alberta/Herman-Norcross in a 7 p.m. game at Mahlen Field. The Spartans, who defeated Ashby 14-8 Wednesday night, will bring a 5-2 record into the game.
