Pirates have five starters back for 2012 volleyball campaign
The Verndale Pirates jump into their 2012 volleyball season with experience in the starting ranks.
Shelley Glenz will have five of her starters back, led by the team's lone senior, outside hitter Teresa Moenkedick. The Verndale attack leader has lettered four times during her career.
The Pirates can go with three setters. Sophomores Elyssa Kern and Kylee Wright will be joined by freshman Sarah Moenkedick.
The only player the Pirates lost to graduation was 5-9 middle hitter Jordy Schluttner.
Freshman Jordyn Glenz will be used as both a middle and outside hitter. Other weapons on the line will be freshman outside hitter Sydney Weniger, junior middle and rightside hitter Krista Dailey, junior outside and rightside hitter Miranda Dougherty and eighth-grade outside and middle hitter Shania Glenz.
Sophomore Jessica Wright will be a defensive specialist for the Pirates.
"Our younger players have become stronger, taller and more powerful offensively," Glenz said.
Glenz looks back on 2011 as a growing season for her young club. The Pirates were 9-17-3 overall and placed fifth in the seven-team Park Region Conference with a 2-4 record.
Glenz is tabbing Henning as the team to beat in the PRC this season. The Hornets finished second to Sebeka in the 2011 conference race.
