Pirates hang tough against Tigers

The Verndale Pirates gave the visiting Nevis Tigers an unwelcome surprise Tuesday night.

Coming off a fourth-place finish in the New York Mills Invitational, the Pirates grabbed a hard-fought 25-20 victory in Game 1, then battled the Tigers down to the wire in losing two 25-21 decisions and 28-26 heartstopper.

Trista Finck had 11 digs and eight kills for the Pirates while Crystal Haskins set up 13 shots and Brittany Kern set 11. Jamie Kern tough at the net with six blocks. Ashley Richter backed up Finck with five kills.

The Pirates defeated Menahga and Swanville, tied New York Mills and lost a pair to Upsala in the New York Mills Invitational.

Upsala was a 16-25, 25-23, 15-12 winner over New York Mills in the championship match. Menahga bounced back to take third place from Verndale with victories of 25-15 and 25-13.

The Bears were a 3-1 winner over Verndale in a Park Region Conference duel at Bertha.

Shelley Glenz saw her Pirates bounce back froma 25-7 drubbing in Game 1 to even the series with a 25-22 win. The Bears took the final two by eight and 12 point margins.

Haskins, Richter and Finck led the Verndale offense with 10 assists, six kills and three ace serves respectively. Richter collected nine digs and Elizabeth Johnson had three blocks to lead Verndale's defensive effort.
