Pirates get a split, two close losses
The Verndale Pirates came back from a 7-4 loss to Park Region Conference foe Pillager Tuesday to earn a split with a 7-2 win.
Shayla Hunstad held Pirates to one earned run through the first four innings. Ally Hunstad took over in the fifth and threw hitless relief.
Jenny Swenson went the first five for Pirates walking one and fanning one. Teresa Moenkedick finished up and allowed one safety in her one inning of work.
Crystal Haskin drove in two runs for Verndale with two hits. Brittany Kern scored twice and had two hits.
Kaylie Hanson and Kaci Steick paced the Huskies with two hits and two RBIs apiece.
Swenson allowed only three hits and two walks as Verndale romped to 7-2 win in Game 2. The Verndale right-hander threw shutout ball for the first four frames.
Brittany Kern and Jordy Schluttner drove in two runs apiece while Hejhal and Elizabeth Johnson collected two hits apiece.

Anna Sabler's two-out double in the eighth inning carried the Tigers past the Pirates in eight frames.
Stacia Pearson reached on a walk in the eighth and after taking two strikes, Sabler laced a two-bagger that scored the go-ahead run.
The Pirates forced extra innings when they knotted the score at 10-all in the bottom of the seventh. Brittany Kern reached on an error, moved up on a sacrifice bunt and stole home.
Heather Hejhal collected three hits and two ribbies for Verndale. Elizabeth Johnson was Verndale's top RBI-producer with four. Johnson also came up with a pair of safeties. Brittany Kern did her job in the lead-off spot scoring four runs. Jamie Kern came up with two hits.
Laura and Lindsey Duncan joined Pearson and Heidi Sticha with two hits apiece.
Jenny Swenson, who took the loss, relieved Teresa Moenkedick in the fourth and struck out six while issuing just three hits and two walks.

Becky Ecklund singled in Courtney Hinzmann with the go-ahead run as the Rebels nipped the Pirates Friday in Verndale.
Dan Johnson's team struggled in the field, committing nine errors.
The Pirates staged a massive six-run comeback to tie the game 9-all in the bottom of the seventh. Jamie Kern's two-run double and RBI-singles by Elizabeth Johnson and Heather Hejhal highlighted the big comeback which saw 11 batters go to the plate.
After Eagle Valley went ahead in the top half of the ninth, Verndale saw Jamie Kern and Lizzy Yungbauer reach in the bottom half of the inning with one out. Swenson flied out and Jordy Schluttner struck out swinging to end the game.
Jamie Kern went 4-for-5 at the plate, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs. Johnson came up with two hits and two ribbies.
Hinzman was the only Eagle Valley player with two hits.
Ashley Ahrendt picked up the win and Swenson suffered the loss.
