Pirates clobber Arrows 48-0 in Section 4 quarterfinals
The Verndale Pirates were in full cry on a breezy October evening Tuesday as they routed the Ashby Arrows 48-0 in the Section 4 quarterfinals.
With Amos Schmidt logging 217 yards on 16 carries and five runners helping the senior back pile up 439 rushing yards, the Pirates racked up 42 first half points.
Schmidt had two of his three touchdowns in the bag before the first quarter was over. He scored Verndale's first two touchdowns on runs of seven and three yards. Colby Schmidt broke off a 63-yard scoring run for Verndale's third TD of the opening quarter.
Zack Meidinger returned to the lineup and started the second quarter off with a 37 yard scoring jaunt. After Cody Yungbauer dashed off a 16-yard scoring run, Amos Schmidt completed the first half scoring with a big 60-yard run. Schmidt has run for 16 touchdowns in the last four games.
Dustin Motschenbacher capped the scoring in the third quarter by going in from the six.
Cody Schmidt gained 70 yards rushing on just four carries for a whopping 17.5 average gain. Meidinger came up with 57 yards on six attempts. Yungbauer and Andrew Green combined for 61 yards on eight carries.
The Pirates picked off four passes to keep the Arrows off the board and pick up their first shutout of the season. Joey Andreasen's club was able to manage only 94 yards rushing and 47 through the air. Colby Schmidt had two interceptions while Amos Schmidt and Dan Kneisl also picked off passes. Kraig Kenyon recovered a fumble for the Pirates. Colton Moyer led the team with seven tackles while Yungbauer had six and Motschenbacher and Jon Kohlhase recorded five apiece. Kyle Booth led the Pirates with two sacks.
The Arrows, who made four trips to the section finals over a five-year period, saw their last strong bid for a state trip ended by Verndale 46-30 at the Fargodome in 2007.
"We played well," Verndale head coach Mike Mahlen said. "We only had the starters in for half the game so we got a bit of a breather."
The Pirates will now entertain Isle in a 7 p.m. game Saturday at Mahlen Field. Isle edged Underwood 24-22 Tuesday night.
Isle competed in Verndale's scrimmage before the season but the two teams have not met since. Stan Miller's Huskies are 7-2. Like Verndale, the Huskies have both size and speed. Miller has a club with 14 seniors. Mahlen knows the Huskies like to mix it up on offense with the shotgun. The Huskies will also play an aggressive, gambling defense and will sometimes bring all nine players against running teams like Verndale.
