Pine River-Backus girls edge Wolverines

Tatum Sheley and the Pine River-Backus Tigers trimmed Wadena-Deer Creek 44-40 Tuesday evening in Mid-State Conference girls' basketball action.

Sheley tacked up 18 points for the Tigers while Katie Wangberg added 12.

The Wolverines put up a balanced scoring effort led by Avery Jackson and Caitlin Volkmann with nine points each. Volkmann made all of her game points on three-point conversions.

The Tigers held a slim 23-20 lead at the half.

The loss was WDC's ninth in a row and dropped the Wolverines to 2-10 on the season.

The conference-leading Patriots sent the Wolverines down in defeat for the eighth straight time last Saturday.

Emily Lueck paced the Pats with 22 points while Kylie Beltz added 12. The victory gave Pequot Lakes a 9-2 record overall and a 4-0 mark in the Mid-State Conference.

Emily Miron tacked up 12 points for WDC in the loss while Kelsi Crawford scored 11.

Hannah Rutten netted 34 points and Alicia Boe added 18 last Thursday as the Eagles tripped the Wolverines in a non-conference tilt.

Courtney Volkmann led the Wolverines with 16 tallies and also came up with five assists. Emily Miron came up with 11 points and 11 boards for a double-double. Kelsi Crawford netted 10. Rachael Carlisle grabbed 11 boards.

"Our offense has improved, but defensively we need to do a better job moving our feet so we are in better position, and also rebounding to limit the other teams second chances," WDC head coach Brian Silbernick said.
