It took awhile for Hurricane Blake Petrich to hit Wadena last Friday night but when it arrived it was devastating.

The Staples-Motley back scored four times in rushing for 169 yards as the Cardinals poured it on late in a 48-6 victory over Wadena-Deer Creek. Petrich scored three of his four touchdowns in the final quarter as the Cards, rated sixth in Class 3A, racked up 30 fourth quarter points.

"We played very well for three quarters," WDC head coach Tom VanErp said. "We didn't execute real well during the late third quarter and fourth quarter and the Cardinals really took it to us."

The Homecoming night game saw Aaron Kern give the Wolverines the early lead when he sprinted off left tackle for a 42-yard touchdown with 2:52 left in the first quarter. The Wolverines started the drive on their own 38 after stopping the Cardinals on downs.

A furious tirade by Staples-Motley head coach Ryan Beachy helped the state-ranked Cardinals come to grips with their situation following Kern's TD. The Cards started their subsequent drive on the 21 and marched 79 yards. Alex Jansson hit Dylan Hales with a 9-yard TD pass at the 9:17 mark of the second quarter.

A fumbled punt return gave the Cardinals field position on WDC's 39 just before the half. Petrich scored the go-ahead touchdown with 2:23 left in the half on a seven-yard run.

The Wolverines kept Petrich out of the end zone in the third quarter, but they could not stop Jansson from converting on a nine-yard run for an 18-6 lead.

Jansson, who rushed for 141 yards in the victory, put Staples-Motley's first TD of the fourth quarter on the board at 10:34 when he went over from the two. It was Petrich scoring on runs of seven, four and 70 yards that broke the game wide open.

Kern topped the century mark in rushing yardage for the third time this season by logging 104 yards on 18 carries.

Jordan Rentz had a good night on defense with 10 tackles and six assists. Isaiah Toedter was right behind with nine solo stops and six assists. Logan Meyer and Colter Pettit combined for 14 tackles and 10 assists. Kern came with an interception and a fumble recovery.

The Wolverines have a 5:45 p.m. date with Pelican Rapids Thursday at the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D. They close out the regular season Oct. 21 by hosting West Central Area in a 7 p.m. contest.
