Perisian scholarship established in Florida
Leo Perisian, a longtime resident of Wadena, passed away in 2007 in Bradenton, Fla., but was honored recently by a Florida VFW club.
Prior to his death, he had been an active member and the chaplain of the Braden River (Fla.) VFW Post 12055. The younger members (those less than 70 years) where in awe as they listened to his historical first-hand accounts of the battles and his explanations of the strategies that lead to U.S. victories in World War II. Perisian was a paratrooper who jumped out of planes behind enemy lines in Europe during the war.
After his unexpected and quick passing, the VFW Post decided to honor him by creating the annual Leo E. Perisian Scholarship Award. The presentation of the first such award to three Braden River High School JROTC students was held the evening of April 30 at the BRHS JROTC Awards Night. Leo's wife, Carol Perisian, was present at the ceremony to congratulate the well-deserved recipients of the scholarship awards.
