After a promising showing at the 2009 state tournament, the WDC coach and players dealt with plenty of adversity, losing homes and their home gymnasium in a June 17 tornado.

With a new home at the WDC Elementary gymnasium and a sense of purpose, the Wolverine girls rolled up a perfect 33-0 record.

They were underdogs for perhaps the first time of the season Saturday afternoon at the state tournament, facing number one seed Hutchinson. But the Wolverines outplayed the Tigers like they had every previous opponent, winning 25-20, 25-19, and beating back several set points by the Tigers to take the decisive third set 29-27.

The Wolverines never dropped a single set in the state tournament, putting together 3-0 sweeps of Delano, Sauk Centre and eventually Hutchinson.

The team, led by coach Sue Volkmann, became the first Wolverine team of the new millennium to call themselves "state champions."
