Perez, Rubin, Garcia ousted in Golden Gloves nationals
Region 4 boxers Jose Perez, Nate Rubin and Sergio Garcia found victory elusive in the National Golden Gloves Tournament April 30-May 3 in Las Vegas, Nev.
Perez, who fought under the Wadena banner during the year, was defeated by eventual runner-up Charles Martin of California in his first bout. Perez was filling the slot for Upper Midwest superheavyweight champ J.J. Moen, who was unable to make the trip.
Rubin, a Merrifield boxer who fought under the Brainerd banner, lost to Robert Quinn of Detroit, Mich. in the 132-pound bracket.
Garcia, a boxer from Fergus Falls, notched a victory over Defrim Begiri of Michigan in the opening round of the 123-pound weight class. He was ousted by losing a close decision to Joseph Rodriquez of Texas.
