Pelican sends WDC to 1-2
Taylor Budke picked up 155 yards on 20 carries and scored two touchdowns Friday night as the Pelican Rapids Vikings handed Wadena-Deer Creek a 20-6 loss.
Budke scored on one and six-yard runs in the first half to give Pelican a 14-6 lead in the Heart O' Lakes Classic Conference game under the WDC lights.
Shut out by Staples-Motley 38-0 in their home opener the week before, the Wolverines scored their first touchdown on their home field in the second quarter.
With the Vikings holding a 7-0 lead, Josh Sherman went on a 52-yard gallop that set up a six-yard scoring run by Jacob Wegscheid.
The Vikings went ahead 14-6 just before the end of the first half when Budke scored from the six.
A pair of field goals by Pelican's Cris Molina in the second half was the only scoring either team could manage.
Logan Meyer logged 70 yards on nine rushing plays for WDC. Meyer also had eight solo stops on defense.
Jacob Ludovissie was second in tackles for the Wolverines with seven. Ludovissie also had three assists. Jared Wegscheid came up with six solos and three assists.
Jed Evenson and Tom Gaustad backed up Budke with 43 and 46 yards on the ground.
The loss dropped the Wolverines to 1-2. The Vikings improved to 2-1.
