PAWS plans Patty's Day show
Cats and St. Patrick's Day will meet at the 9th annual PAWS (Pets Abandoned Wanting Support) cat show to be held Saturday, March 17, at the Verndale Lions Building from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The cat show draws people around the area, including 4-H students and people who have adopted cats from PAWS.
"We send out an invitation letter to people who have adopted cats from us," Dr. Bridget King said, adding that it is not possible for many people to show up because they have adopted cats out to North Dakota and the Twin Cities area.
A plaque will be awarded for "Best in Show," and first- and second-place winners will be named in a variety of categories including greenest eyes, biggest ears, longest whiskers, leprechaun look-a-like, oldest cat, youngest cat and shortest whiskers.
For the Leprechaun look-a-like category, the flyer notes, "you can dress them up."
Fastest agility course runner is another category. Last year there was an agility course but it was not part of the contest.
Another category is "How has your cat been your lucky charm." It is a story the contestants would tell.
King said her "lucky charm" cat story was around Christmas as her 18-year-old cat, Mr. Miles, was dying of cancer. One of King's clients found a kitten crying by M State, and the kitten was brought in right before Christmas.
King kept the kitten Nicholas and said it made the passing of the older cat much easier.
This year there will also be a cage display contest with a $10 cash prize.
King said that people have often come up with creative cat cage displays. Several years ago there was an adopted cat Jack who had one through enucleation.
"They dressed up his carrier like it was a ship, and he was a pirate - One-Eyed Jack the pirate," she said.
The pre-registration deadline is March 9 with $5 for the first cat and $3 for any additional cats, or contestants can register at the door for $10 for the first cat and $5 for additional cats.
Other activities include a silent auction, lunch with free will auction, craft making table and photo contest for any type of photo.
