Park Rapids officials accept resignation of city administrator

Email

The Park Rapids City Council formally accepted the resignation of City Administrator Bill Smith.

"I thank the council for entrusting the city to my care for the past four years," he said in a letter. "That decision is especially telling considering that I came to the helm just as the terrible economic downturn of 2008 occurred. The loss of LGA payments and the press of failing infrastructure were challenging."

Smith has accepted a position as CEO of Regional Healthcare Affiliates in Providence, Ky.

His last day is Wednesday, Sept. 5 and he will start his new position Sept. 10.

Council members said they would miss Smith and thanked him for his work with the city.

Mayor Nancy Carroll and council member Paul Utke will look into what process to take in filling the vacancy and report back to the council at a future meeting.

In other business, the council:

n Received a formal request from resident Julie Snow asking that city administrator Bill Smith reprimand city planner Dan Walker for recent behavior and apologize.

Snow was referring to a letter she received from city staff asking her to remove a camper from her yard that was seen on her property on a certain date. The camper was actually not on her property on that date and Walker admitted his mistake.

By the time of Tuesday's council meeting Walker and Smith went to Snow's house and apologized.

Smith said there wasn't anything else that needed to be done and he had already spoken to Walker and the situation seemed resolved.

The council said they were behind their employees and were confident the situation was resolved and wouldn't happen again in the future.
