Old Wadena holding annual meeting
Wadena Minnesota 314 S. Jefferson 56482

The Old Wadena Society will hold its annual meeting and program at the Town's Edge Restaurant, formerly T. Maxwell's, on U.S. Highway 10 in Staples, at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 15. The meeting is free and open to the public. The meeting will include a program presented by Ron Wienhold of Little Sauk.

Wienhold has had a lifelong interest in the sciences of geology, botany and archaeology. His program at the Old Wadena Society annual meeting will discuss the past glacial period of this area and its effects in shaping where and how we live today. He will also address examples of how climate change could once again alter our environment and the way we live, including the landscape, people, animals and plants.

Wienhold is the vice-president of the Todd County Historical Society. He is the owner-operator of River Glen Gardens in Little Sauk and gives tours of his amazing gardens and museum to many groups during the summer months.

Wienhold worked as a printer at Hart Press in Long Prairie for 43 years. He has spent a lifetime experiencing and gathering exciting facts in his scientific fields of interest. He has also guided groups on overseas tours to a number of countries, and tours for local groups to locations in the U.S.

A business meeting will be held after Wienhold's presentation. It will include progress reports on the county archeological investigations by University of Minnesota Assistant Professor Kat Hayes, a preview of the 2012 Wadena Rendezvous in August, and dates for the 2012 Conservation Days held at Old Wadena Park involving over 300 students from area schools and sponsored by the Wadena County Soil and Water Conservation District. A progress report on the Bogwalk Project in Old Wadena Park will also be given.

Following the business meeting, the Friend of Old Wadena award presentation will be made and election of board members will be held.

The annual Friend of Old Wadena award is given to a person who has made significant volunteer contributions to enhance knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of the historical and/or environmental aspects of the Crow Wing Watershed, including - but not limited to - Old Wadena Park. The 2012 Friend of Old Wadena Award will be presented posthumously to Jim White of Nimrod, who passed away in February. White was a member of the Wadena Parks Board for 31 years and was chair for 27 of those years. His many achievements will be celebrated at the presentation ceremony during the meeting.

Old Wadena Society members and the public are encouraged to purchase a noon meal at the Town's Edge restaurant before the meeting. There is plenty of free parking available.

The Old Wadena Society was founded in 1971 to promote the Old Wadena Park, encourage educational opportunities for its members and the general public, and increase environmental awareness and appreciation of the history of central Minnesota. The board of directors meets the second Thursday evening of each month to plan and carry out its programs.
