Nuggets pile up 86-23 win over WDC

The Hawley Nuggets held Wadena-Deer Creek to a meager nine points in the first half en route to an 86-23 victory March 7 in the South Sub-Section 8AA boys’ basketball tournament.
Hosting the Wolverines on their home court in the first round of sub-section action, the Nuggets outscored the WDC club 57-9 in the first half.
Alex Redfield led the Wolverines in scoring with six points. Ricky Price scored five points. The Wolverines shot a cool 15 percent from the field.
Devon Pekas was high-point man for the Nuggets with 26. Ben Ellefson chalked up 15 points. The Nuggets canned 13 3-pointers and shot 36 percent from the field.
Jacob Crompton pulled down eight rebounds as the Nuggets dominated the boards 44-16. Redfield and Keith Paulson both hauled down three rebounds for WDC.
“We knew Hawley was tough,” WDC Head Coach Doug Haas said. “They are a very, very good team. We couldn’t compete with them.”
The victory was Hawley’s 25th in 26 games this season. Hawley entered the tournament ranked No. 1 in the south half of Section 8AA and No. 2 in the Class AA state poll.
The Wolverines ended the season with 5-21. They were 4-4 after the Sebeka Holiday Tournament on Dec. 28, but lost 17 of their last 18 games.
