Nuggets hand Wolverines 58-34 playoff loss
A Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines closed their season out with a quiet shooting night Thursday as they fell to Hawley 58-34 in the South Sub-Section 8AA quarterfinals at Hawley.
The Wolverines shot 33 percent from the field hitting on 14 of 42 shots. The Wolverines were 0-for-7 from three-point range.
The top-seeded Nuggets, who won their 13th game in a row, built a 16-point lead with 7:14 left to play in the first half on a field goal by Brittany Laddusaw. Hope Theisen closed the gap to 10 with a pair of free throws at the 4:44 mark but halftime found the Nuggets back on top 32-16.
Jody Noreen dropped in a pair of treys in the first minute of the second half and the Nuggets never looked back. The Wolverines missed on eight straight shots over a five-minute stretch and the halfway mark of the second half found them trailing by 20.
Theisen, who topped the 1,000-point scoring plateau in WDC's season-ending game Feb. 28 with Frazee, led the Wolverines with 16 points. Theisen dropped in six deuces and canned all four of her free throws. Jennifer Craig also scored in double figures with 15 tallies. Casey Volkmann and Katie Peterson were the only other WDC players to score.
Noreen canned all six of her treys in pacing the Nuggets with 21 points. Noreen was a perfect 7-for-7 on field goal attempts. She missed two of her three free throws. Olivia Olson added 10.
Theisen was WDC's top rebounder with eight boards. The Wolverines pulled down 33 rebounds.
The Wolverines ended the season with a 4-20 record. The Nuggets pushed their record to 19-6.
