Wadena City Council member Don Niles announced Wednesday his candidacy for the Minnesota House of Representatives District 9A running as a member of the Democratic Farmer-Labor party. As a result of the recent legislative redistricting there is not an incumbent candidate within District 9A, which includes portions of Cass, Todd and Wadena Counties.

Niles was elected to the Wadena City Council in 2008. He is active in the community with activities including Vice Chair of the Kitchigami Regional Library System, Wadena Library Board member, Rotary member, Wadena-Deer Creek Public Schools Instructional and Curriculum Advisory Committee, and Messiah Lutheran Church Council president.

"Eighty to 90 percent of the work of the legislature is helping constituents and solving problems, and the rest involves ideology. I hope to bring to the legislature a strong voice for focusing on solving problems and getting things done," Niles said.

An attorney by profession, Niles said he believes his training in law will be an asset in crafting legislation and working to bridge different perspectives. "My work as chair of the Wadena 2.0 committee following the June 2010 tornado has inspired me with the knowledge that collaboration and working together for a common good is possible in this district," he said.

He is a graduate of Macalester College with a degree in economics, and received his law degree from William Mitchell College of Law in 1984. He has been listed as a Minnesota Super Lawyer and has the Martindale Hubbell AV Preeminent peer review rating, the highest possible rating in both legal ability and ethical standards.

Don Niles is married to Loni Niles, teacher and media specialist for the Wadena-Deer Creek school system. Their two sons, Eliah and Danny, attend WDC schools.

Eliah will be attending Bemidji State University in fall 2012 following high school graduation this spring. Niles has three adult daughters by a previous marriage, and one granddaughter.

Niles describes himself as a fiscal conservative and a social liberal. His personal interests include downhill skiing, hunting and fishing, flying, vintage motorcycles and reading.
