WDC Schools to hold two food drives at holiday programs

Wadena-Deer Creek Schools is holding two food drives to benefit the Wadena Food Shelf. The public is encouraged to bring non-perishable items to the 5 through 12 grade choir concert on Monday, Dec. 16 and the K through 4 grade holiday program on Thursday, Dec. 19. Tables will be set up by the entrances. Please consider donating any non-perishable items to help replenish the Wadena Food Shelf during the holidays.

The 5 through 12 grade choir concert on Dec. 16 begins at 7:30 p.m. in the middle/high school gymnasium and the K through 4 grade holiday program starts at 2 p.m. and will be held in the elementary gym.

Bemidji truck driver killed in crash with Amtrak train

A Bemidji man was killed Friday afternoon when the tractor-trailer he was driving collided with an Amtrak passenger train in Todd County.

Donald Ray Hedlund Sr., 57, was traveling northwest on 317th Street in Fawn Lake Township when he failed to stop at a railroad crossing at Red Rock Road, according to the Todd County Sheriff's Office. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hedlund was driving a 2011 Kenworth semi for Minnesota Limited out of Big Lake.

Two train passengers were taken by ambulance to Lakewood Hospital for treatment. The sheriff's office said several others suffered minor injuries but were not hospitalized.

The Todd County Sheriff's Office received the accident call at 4:25 p.m. Friday. Staples Fire and Rescue, the Wadena County Sheriff's Office and Minnesota State Patrol assisted at the scene.

Bloodmobile a success

Monday's bloodmobile at Wadena's VFW Post No.3922 derived 99 units with a goal of 103. This included 17 Double Red Blood Cells. There were 9 Walkins. Tuesday's bloodmobile resulted in 69 units with a goal of 66. 9 Double Red Blood Cells were collected. There were 8 Walkins.

Gallon Pins went to: Ruth Kalk, Hewitt (6 gallon), Deb Belch, Phil Thoennes and Matthew Quaal, Wadena (5 gallon) and Ann Johnson, Wadena (2 gallon).

Thanks to all who helped make this a successful Bloodmobile.
