New record low set Sept. 15
A record low temperature for Sept. 15 was set this year for Wadena.
The official climate station three miles south of town recorded 26 degrees.
"That is a record low. The previous record low for the 15th was 28 back in 1964," lead forecaster Dan Riddle at the National Weather Service in Grand Forks said.
The 1964 figure was taken from the same site, and the records for Wadena go back to 1893.
The Wadena airport also recorded 21 degrees on Sept. 15.
At that time, the area was under a freeze warning despite being still within the calendar summer.
"Well, 'technically summer' doesn't mean too much up here," Riddle said.
Meteorological summer ends with the end of August, and the middle of September brings longer nights that promote cooler air masses, he said.
