The bandstand in the Burlington Northern Park is back in business.

Public Works Director Ron Bucholz said that the nearly 100-year-old bandstand has been restored to structural safety and retouched to emphasize its historicity.

"We put the wood trim around the steel railings to give it more of the old look," he said.

The rest of the project is not yet complete, and Bucholz said that the city plans to finish landscaping and improve the parking lot in the spring.

"We wanted to put it back to be kind of in the same historical era as what that was originally built," he said.

Bucholz said that the old bandstand had been deteriorating over time with plaster falling off columns and safety issues with some of the railings.

"There was a small fire in there several years ago that made it structurally unsound," he said.

For several years, the bandstand was unusable.

Bucholz said that the Wadena city band had summer concerts until about three years ago, and that the bandstand had also been used to put up a Nativity scene every Christmas season.

The bandstand was built in 1917 through a gift by John Dower.
