Mustangs edge Wolverines in Otter Classic
Freshman Jeremiah Hanson broke open a tight game by sinking five of six technical free throws Wednesday as the Maranatha Academy Mustangs edged Wadena-Deer Creek 69-64 in the Otter Holiday Classic.
"I chirped to the ref one time, then Ryan (Redfield) said something and then Jeremy (Sherman)," said WDC Head Coach Tom VanErp. "I don't think it was a poorly officiated game, I think there was one poor official."
VanErp said the reason the protests were lodged had to do with the way the officials were calling fouls under the basket.
"They called it and then they didn't call it," VanErp said.
It was after a particularly rough exchange under the Maranatha hoop that play was suddenly stopped. Players were called to the sideline and the crowd watched Hanson take free throw shooting practice. Both teams were called for 19 fouls in the physical game.
Hanson's free throws gave the Mustangs a 63-52 lead with 4:50 remaining in the second half but Tom VanErp's Wolverines were not done. Evan VanErp and Ben Birch led a seven-point surge that brought the Wolverines back to within four with 3:44 to go.
Hanson was not done either. The 6-3 post cashed in on a short jumper with 50 secondes left to put the Mustangs ahead 65-59. The Wolverines tacked up a deuce and called a timeout with 42 seconds left.
After Jamey Hammond dropped in two free throws to give Maranatha a 67-61 lead, WDC eighth-grader Andrew VanErp showed his shooting touch by sinking a trey with 30 seconds remaining and make it a two-point game.
The Wolverines would put up no more points but Hammond and Garrison Gillard sank free throws to seal the win for Maranatha.
"Down the stretch they made enough to make it a two-possession game," VanErp said.
VanErp had a season-high 28 points for the Wolverines and Ben Birch tacked up 18. Ryan Redfield scored just eight points after having a 23-point game against Pine River-Backus Dec. 13 and a 20-point game Dec. 16 against Staples-Motley. Jeremiah Hanson canned 23 points for Maranatha and Gillard added 15.
The Wolverines will be hosting Verndale Tuesday and will travel to Crosby-Ironton for a Mid-State Conference tilt Friday.
