Wet turf is supposed to "even the playing field," but that was not the case last Friday when Tom VanErp's Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines hosted Staples-Motley.

"We 'unevened' it by fumbling seven times," VanErp said. The Cardinals parlayed those miscues into a 38-0 victory on a night which saw both teams play football in a steady rain.

The Wolverines lost the ball three times on turnovers while the Cards lost it twice.

The Wolverines were able to hold the Cardinals in check on the ground in the first quarter but Kyle Jansson gave his team a 6-0 lead when he found Tanner Roberts open on a 69-yard pass play.

"In the first quarter we did a real nice job of taking care of their veer back and their quarterback," VanErp said.

Blake Petrich got the big play going for Staples-Motley once again in the second quarter when he scored from 66 yards out. Gavin Kadlec then hit paydirt on a 60-yard carry. The Cards kept pounding as Kadlec went in from the 10 for a 26-0 halftime lead.

The Cardinals hurt the Wolverines with the trap in the third quarter and fullback Cody Hoemberg punched in a pair of touchdowns on two-yard carries.

Petrich logged 110 yards on nine carries and caught two balls for 51 yards. Kadlec rushed for 101 yards on just six attempts. Hoemberg logged 98 yards on 10 carries.

WDC quarterback Colter Pettit was just one of seven through the air for three yards. Josh Sherman picked up 55 yards on eight carries to lead the WDC rushing game. Logan Meyer carried 11 times for 53 yards. Taylor Bienusa and Jacob Wegscheid gained 34 and 32 yards respectively.

In addition to taking their first loss of the 2010 season, the Wolverines lost lineman Nolan Johnson for 3-4 weeks with a sprained knee. Johnson set up WDC's 19-13 victory over Park Rapids in Week 1 with a blocked punt fumble recovery.

The Wolverines travel to West Central Area Friday for their first game with the Knights since last year's regular season finale when they ended a 23-game losing streak with a 12-6 victory.
