He was born April 7, 1959 at St. James Hospital in Perham, to Leroy Millard Hagel and Luella (Schwartz) Eskola. He grew up on the family farm in Heinola. In 1970, the Hagel family moved to New York Mills where he attended New York Mills High School. He was employed with Tuffy's in Perham for two years and then later employed with North American Restoration until 1986 when he came home to take care of his son, Joey. The next year he was employed by Ethan Curtis Masonry. He owned and operated M & D Construction where he worked with the weatherization programs for homes through the Otter Tail-Wadena Community Action in New York Mills until 2004 when he retired due to illness. He lived his life to the fullest and he treasured being a father to Joey, who was his pride and joy. He had many good friends and he made new friends wherever he went. He valued everything he was given or earned and his gifts to others had special meaning behind it after he thought it through. He had numerous hobbies throughout his life, including fishing, hunting, camping, cooking and gardening. He loved gardening and worked many hours in the garden so he could share his fresh veggies with family and friends. He enjoyed shooting pool on leagues and won many trophies. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles, snowmobiles, going to garage sales and tinkering on his vehicles. He loved all people and always welcomed others to his home with open arms and made sure there were refreshments to share.

Memorial services were held March 30 at the Apostolic Lutheran Church in New York Mills with the Rev. Andy Tumberg, Chaplain Jim Knoll and Doug Hill officiating. The honorary pallbearers were all of his close friends. Interment will be in Woodland Cemetery, New York Mills. Arrangements were provided by the Karvonen & Son Funeral Home of New York Mills.
