Craig Klawitter is sure of one thing this spring -- the competition is going to be just that much better.

Klawitter's team won the Mid-State Conference title with an 11-1 record last year and finished 19-6 overall. The Wolverines stayed alive in the double elimination Section 8AA playoffs for five games until being ousted by section runner-up Detroit Lakes.

The Wolverines have a returning starter back at shortstop in senior Kendra Grothmann. Also back is senior Steph Perkins, who will pitch and play center field this year. Junior Steph Hahn is back to handle an infield spot. The three letterwinners will be joined by senior letterwinners Cecelia Sakry and Megan Schmidt.

Sonja Stevens is another upperclassmen expected to play varsity ball.

Juniors who should start the season with the varsity include Kelly DeFoe, Lexie Hoemberg, Sam Holweger, Megan Popp, Jessica Wegscheid and sophomore Amanda Perkins.

Klawitter is keeping a lot of positions open this season until he gets a good look at all of his players. Another senior taking a shot at a varsity playing time is Allie Olson. The Wolverines are loaded with juniors. In addition to the six Klawitter expects to make the varsity, he has Brittany Anderson, Heather Cooper, Sydney Mohs, Yalonda Nelson, Perola Barbosa, Priska Faleh, Jessica Guerra and Nevena Koeva, Dell Rizzolio and Maike Stoz.

The Wolverines will also be looking at sophomores Ashley Pauly, Anja Reichelt and Christina Wolden and a large freshman group that includes Steph Ament, Shelby Cullifer, Melody Goeden, Avery Jackson, Morgan Lugert, Chelsea Maloney, Allison Monson, Kaylee Mulligan, Katarina Reece and Paige Schiller.

Klawitter rates Staples, Perham and Park Rapids as three of WDC's top section foes this year.
