Menahga girls place fourth at state
The Menahga Braves finished fourth in the Class A state softball tournament last Friday by falling to Badger-Greenbush-Middle River 6-2 in 11 innings at North Mankato's Caswell Park.
Rushelle Flaten went 5-for-6 at the plate to lead the Gators past Menahga in the third place contest. The Gators tied the game 2-2 in the top of the sixth inning but Menahga hurler Lindsey White tossed four scoreless innings before surrendering four runs in the top of the 11th. The Gators strung five hits together in the four-run 11th.
White scattered 13 hits and four walks while fanning 10. Erin Efta pitched five innings of scoreless relief ball to notch the victory.
Menahga's Jada Melton went 2-for-3 in the loss.
The Braves, who were the only team to make the state tournament with a losing record, stunned Blooming Prairie 2-1 in eight innings to open the state tournament on Thursday. They fell to Class A runner-up Barnum 4-0 in their second game on Thursday.
The Braves beat Blooming Prairie as Joy Haataja drove in Tarah Cleveland with two out in the eighth.
White defeated Erica Manske in a terrific pitching duel that saw the two hurlers combine for 13 innings of shutout ball. White fanned six and did not allow a walk. Manske surrendered one walk while fanning 12.
The Braves ran into a stone wall in the second round as Barnum's Katrina Newman recorded a no-hitter. Newman walked two and fanned nine in out-pitching White who walked one and fanned two.
Paige Rilea had three hits and Katie Myhre had two for Barnum.
The Braves ended their season with a record of 11-16.
