Doris Martini's story is interesting and not quite like any other. She was born in 1924 in Yellow Medicine County, to Alfred and Stella Gigstad. She has two brothers. Doris and her brothers graduated from high school in Wood Lake.

Doris's first job was that of receptionist for Dr. Kath in Wood Lake. The war with Japan was in full swing and factories on the west coast needed help. Doris went to work in a shipyard where she learned how to weld among other things. A regular work week was 42 hours.

After one year, Doris returned to Minnesota. She worked for Dr. N.E. Nettermoe. This was where she met and married Harlan Gniffke who was a federal butter inspector for Northern Cooperatives in Wadena. They have one daughter. Harlan died in 1981.

In 1984, Doris married Chester Martini, who had been a farmer for 40 years. Doris was employed by Brink's Jewelry store.

Doris especially likes flowers. When she visited Amsterdam, as well as several other countries, she paid special attention to the development of a particular plant she was interested in. She has plants in her room. She also enjoys reading and liked to travel along with keeping up on the news.

Doris and I were both members of the Wadena Garden Club for years, until getting there became a problem. It was fun going back over programs. This morning I had breakfast at an exclusive place. It is called the Tree Top Cafe. It serves only important folks, our residents. It is located in a most attractive dining room on the top floor of Fair Oaks Lodge.

Once each month, always on a Wednesday, every resident, with the exception of a very few, is treated to a great farmer's breakfast event at the Tree Top Cafe, where they choose what they will have from a menu that offers eggs (scrambled, fried hard, over easy), roll (caramel, cinnamon), toast (wheat, white, butter, jelly, peanut butter), beverage (milk, coffee, chocolate), fruit (banana, orange).

On other farmer's breakfast days the menu may be choices around hot biscuits and gravy, waffles, french toast or pancakes.

It is a winner of an event, looked forward to each month by everyone.
