Marjorie Helen (Kraft) Hess, 85, of Clatskanie, Ore., formerly of Verndale, passed away May 30 in Oregon.
She was born Dec. 16, 1923, in Verndale, and was the daughter of Clarence and Melvina Kraft. She graduated from Verndale High School. She married Richard Lynn Hess on Dec. 26, 1941. She was a homemaker and together they had nine children. She also worked as a cook for the YMCA in Salem, Ore.
They moved from Verndale in 1965 to Portland, Ore., to Clatskanie, Ore. in 1971, to Salem, Ore., in 1979, then back to Clatskanie in 1999.
She attended Hope Chapel and Verndale Alliance Church. She loved sewing and knitting and was always working on some type of craft project to give to one of her many grandchildren. Dining out was a special delight for her. She loved reading and helping children with their schoolwork.
She was interned at Murray Hill Cemetery in Clatskanie, Ore. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on July 18 at Clatskanie Baptist Church, 415 South Nehalem, Clatskanie, Ore.
Survivors include her husband, Richard Lynn Hess, of Clatskanie; her nine children, Larry Hess of Mollala, Ore., Shirley Ritter of Portland, Ore., Barb Borden of Albany, Ore., Steve Hess of Spokane, Wash., Gary Hess of Jefferson, Ore., Andy Hess of Glenallen, Alaska, Sharon Hoagland of Astoria, Ore., Kevin Hess of Clatskanie, Ore., and Joseph Hess of Battleground, Wash.; and 21 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
