Manager becomes owner of new Mexican restaurant
Authentic Mexican food remains in Wadena as the former El Tequilas has undergone a change in ownership.
The new Los Jalapenos opened Monday under the ownership of Yobani Melchior, who had been the manager of the El Tequilas Wadena location.
They are still waiting on the liquor license, but otherwise the new menu and soft drinks are available.
More than 100 items are on the menu, including seafood, Mexican desserts, a la carte and side orders, vegetarian options, $6 lunch specials and a kids' menu with North American options.
Melchior's favorite is La Parrillada, a meal for two with four different meats, rice and beans, quesadillas, guacamole and vegetables.
Among the soft drinks are a selection of Jarritos, a popular brand of soda in Mexico.
When the liquor license comes through, there will be both imported and domestic drinks.
Gloria Camacho, Melchior's wife, said the authentic Mexican food is made fresh, not canned, and made to order.
She said prices at Los Jalapenos are lower than before.
"My husband knows the town and the people, and he liked it, and he's been running it for the past two years," she said. "He just likes the town and he wanted to stay in the town."
The employees of El Tequilas will continue working at Los Jalapenos.
El Tequilas, which still has other locations in Fergus Falls and Baxter, opened in Wadena in late spring 2010. Not long after, on June 17 of that year, an EF4 tornado tore into it and other businesses on the west side of Wadena. The restaurant was repaired and re-opened quickly.
