Mahlen going into Hall of Fame Saturday
Verndale's Mike Mahlen will add another feather to his cap Saturday at the Doubletree Hotel in Minneapolis.
Minnesota's winningest high school football coach will be inducted into the Minnesota Football Coaches Hall of Fame.
Mahlen graduated from Erskine and attended college at Mayville (N.D.) State. He excelled in football, basketball and baseball at Erskine and starred in football at Mayville. He taught at Verndale for 35 years before retiring. Mahlen currently serves as Verndale's athletic director, a position he has held for 36 years, and head football coach, a job he has held since 1969.
Mahlen's football teams have won two state championships. Mahlen has a gridiron record of 314-95-3. The Pirates have won 18 conference and 13 section titles under Mahlen, including the 2008 section crown.
Mahlen also served as Verndale's track and field coach for 20 years.
Mike and his wife, Sally, live in Wadena where they operate Mahlen's Trophy Company. Their children, Jason and Gena, are both teachers.
