After 36 years, Mary and Terry Lynk are closing Lynk's TrueValue Hardware and retiring from owning and managing the store.

"We are shooting for closing the end of the year," Mary Lynk said.

The walls are covered in bright sale signs now.

The hardware store, which used to be Coast to Coast before switching to the TrueValue name in 1999, has been a fixture in downtown Wadena for decades.

"[Terry's] father bought into the business in 1947, and we bought his dad's partner out in '75," Mary said.

Terry was born into the hardware business, and it was hardware that brought them together when the couple first met in Cambridge, Minn.

"I was actually working in a hardware store when I met Terry," Mary said.

For the Lynks, the 1970s and 1980s were good years to have a small business, but starting with the 1990s, big box stores started squeezing out the competition.

"I foresee not seeing mom and pop stores in 10 years," Mary said.

Mary said they received several inquiries about purchasing the building location, but they don't know what will be next for it.

She said her favorite aspect of owning a hardware store was the people who had become their friends.

Besides owning the store, the Lynks have managed it and been there day to day.

The Lynks plan to continue working after retirement, however.

Mary said she is looking forward to "working a 40-hour week and not taking the stress home - not actual retirement."

She also said they were hoping to keep in touch with the people they met through the business.

"We would like to thank all our faithful customers for their support and friendship over the years, and hope to continue the friendship even into our retirement," she said.
