LPGE jumps on Wolverines
A slow start in their season opener proved costly Tuesday night as the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines lost a 52-37 decision to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle.
The Thunder opened a 13-3 lead in the first half and took a 29-12 advantage into halftime. The Wolverines were just four of 21 from the field in the first half.
"It came down to our shooting percentage in the first half," WDC head coach Tom VanErp said.
Cody Warner pumped in 20 points for the Thunder while Duane Miller and Jake Kingston canned 12 and 11 points respectively.
Jordan Reed had a double-double for the Wolverines with 13 points and 11 rebounds. VanErp felt that Reed, who is the only returning starter from last year's team, did not handle the ball enough but credited Long Prairie's 2-3 zone with doing a good job against his big inside shooter. Reed set a team scoring record last year in a game with Crookston by scoring 46 points.
The Wolverines hit on four of their 14 three-point shots but were 15 of 44 on two-point attempts for a 34 percent clip. The Thunder shot 44 percent from the field.
The Thunder out-rebounded the Wolverines 35-28. They were murder on the offensive boards in the first half scoring seven times in the first half on nine chances.
