Loren Thalmann

Loren Alvin Thalmann, 75, of Henning, died Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at the Henning Golden Living Center.

He was born in Ottertail on March 24, 1934, the son of Herman and Eleonora (Grefe) Thalmann. He grew up at Ottertail and was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church at Ottertail. He attended St. John's Parochial school through the eighth grade and graduated from Henning High School with the class of 1953. He served in the Army from 1956 until 1958. He then worked for Oliver Mining Company in Eveleth, Minn., and also raised turkeys for Henning Hatchery. He married Janice Tiede on Oct. 7, 1961, at St. John's Lutheran Church. They had three children. They made their home on their farm in Ottertail until January 1969 when they moved into Henning and opened Thalmann's Cafe, which they operated until August 1973. He began selling life insurance in April 1960 and was active in the Thalmann Insurance Agency until his retirement in Oct. 31, 2008. He loved selling the best insurance that was suited for his clients for 48 1/2 years and kept in touch by calling them on their birthdays every year. He liked to bowl, fry pancakes, fish, hunt, build birdhouses, play cards, and raise ducks and geese. He especially loved to go fishing with his little grandsons. He loved to take family vacations which included Branson, Mo., Alaska, Hawaii, and many other areas of the United States. He was active in Henning. He was a member of the Henning Volunteer Fire Department, the Commercial Club, Clement Manor board, Henning Homes board, Henning Food Shelf, Henning Lions Club, St. Paul's Lutheran Church Council, and he served 17 years on the Henning City Council.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 22, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Henning with the Revs. Randy Maland and David Cloeter officiating. Casket bearers were Alan Cloutier, Mike Sanders, Rod Thalmann, Pete Thalmann, Jason Tiede and David Sanders. Interment is in St. John's Cemetery at Ottertail. Survivors include his wife, Janice; daughters, Lori Kay (Joe) Pytlik, Horace, N.D., and Becky Sue (Mark) Eisenwinter, St. Cloud; two grandsons; two stepgrandchildren; sister, Elvera (Bernard) Sanders, DePere, Wis.; brothers, Victor (Jackie) Thalmann, Grand Junction, Colo., and Roland (LaVey) Thalmann, of Ottertail; brothers-in-law, Dennis (Judy) Tiede, Wadena, and Dana Tiede, Port St. John, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a son, Craig Herman Thalmann, on June 10, 1964; his parents, Herman and Eleonora; and a sister and brother-in-law, Elaine and Leonard Cloutier.
