Towels returned after being stolen from fair
Darian Nadgwick saw her first trip to the state fair stolen, along with her hand-embroidered dishtowels.
Nadgwick, 12, of rural Bertha, won grand champion honors at the Wadena County Fair with a set of seven dishtowels she had embroidered with days of the week and a little girl. But when her family went to pick up the towels at the end of the county fair on July 31, the towels were gone.
"At first I thought, 'I can't go to the state fair,'" she said. "I was pretty upset about that."
She said hope seemed gone. Diane Hinkle, 4H program coordinator, wrote a letter to the editor in the Aug. 4 Wadena Pioneer Journal. On Friday morning, the dishtowels were found in a plastic bag tied to the door of the Pioneer Journal office. A small note inside said simply that the towels had been found.
