Excerpts from the Dec. 22, 2005 Pioneer Journal

• Nativity to be Christmas Day

A baby has been found to play Jesus during the live nativity Sunday at the National Guard Armory.

Herimann Frost of New York Mills will be baby Jesus. His mother will play Mary, and his grandfather will play Joseph. The live nativity will be at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Other local actors will play parts as the Christmas story is told through narration.

• Longtime art gallery moves to downtown

Hanson's Art Gallery can bring out-of-the-box ideas into in-the-frame masterpieces.

The business is now at 206 S. Jefferson St. and had a grand opening Dec. 15.

As the year 2000 winds down and New Year's Eve winks at us from around the corner, we get to thinking about the year ahead. There is no Y2K to fret about or major crisis in the political forefront, so individuals look at their own lives and speculate.

• From the law enforcement log

Dec. 18: Thieves stole 80 to 100 feet of Christmas lights from a County Road 23 fence.

Dec. 22: Thieves stole Christmas gifts totaling $230 from a Wadena Second Street apartment utility room.

Dec. 25: At 11 p.m. a 180th Street resident asked law enforcement to determine if a skunk smell was actually propane. It was a skunk.

• Farm crisis town meeting

At first glance, it seemed like there would only be a handful of area people at the DFL Farm Crisis Town Meeting that took place at the Wadena Armory Thursday, Dec. 12.

But before the evening ended, the room kept filling up with people, and it turned out to be a good turn-out.

• Christmas season adds volume for postal service

The Christmas rush is over. For one group of service people; they can now sit back, relax a little, and be thankful that -- until tax season begins -- their work will return to a normal pace.

• Sounds of holiday season to be aired on KWAD-KKWS

Special Christmas musical programming featuring area high school music departments will be heard on KWAD-KKWS radio this coming weekend.

• Local car wash has new owners

John and Lucille lieder of Hwy. 71 South in Wadena are the new owners and operators of the former E & B Car Wash located on Hwy. 10 west.

Now called J & L Car Wash, the Lieders took over the business Dec. 1, 1970.

Mike Ebner and Merle Besett established the car wash in Wadena three years ago.

Excerpts from the Dec. 28, 1950 Pioneer Journal

• Annual tree pick-up will be Jan. 7

Save that Christmas tree! This is the request of the Wadena Junior Chamber of Commerce, who call attention that their annual Christmas tree pick-up is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 7.

The trees will be gathered by the Jaycees in the afternoon, and taken to the skating rink for the huge bonfire which will be a feature of the annual skating party for the boys and girls that evening.

• Cozy to give kids Roy Rogers picture Friday, Saturday

Friday and Saturday nights, the King of Cowboys, Roy Roger [sic] and his horse, "Trigger," will be seen in "Bells of Coronado." Dale Evans supports Rogers in heading the cast. As an added feature, Manager Clarence Quincer will give a colored picture of Roger and his horse to all the children attending the show. The fast-paced picture filled with action, comedy and drama, finds the popular cowboy actor in the role of an undercover agent working near a uranium mine.
