Lightning erupt in final period against Wolverines

The Northern Lakes Lightning broke open a close game with four goals in the third period Monday in downing Mid-State Conference foe Wadena-Deer Creek 6-3.

The Lightning grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first period as Nick Blanchette scored the first of his three goals. The Wolverines were quiet offensively in the opening period with only two shots on goal.

After Blanchette added in second goal of the game at the 9:43 mark of the second period, WDC's Drew Killian put his club on the board at the 10:54 mark with an assist from Michael Behl.

The Lightning struck hard in the third period with Austin Mesenbrink, Kyle Sellner and Joe Maurcieri joining Blanchette in a scoring blitz. The Lightning put 18 shots on goal to WDC's seven.

The Wolverines managed to recover later in the period with Dylan Phillips icing a goal at 12:55 and Behl finding the net at 14:05. Jarrett Pettit earned assists on both goals. Behl and Phillips were also credited with assists.

The Lightning out-shot the Wolverines 42-11.

Chris Holman's Wolverines will host Prairie Centre at 7 p.m. Friday before traveling to Red Lake Falls Saturday for a 2 p.m. game.

The Wolverines were out-shot 50-16 Thursday in a Mid-State Conference loss to the Lakers in Detroit Lakes.

Jacob Fritz and Casey Paskey iced first period goals for the Lakers and Brady Crawford put DL up 3-0 at the 4:38 mark of the second period.

Michael Behl broke up a shutout bid at 16:28 of the second period with an assist going to Dylan Phillips.

Ryan Deconcini connected on a power play goal at the 1:35 mark of the third period.

Wesley Janson blocked 46 shots in the loss. Austin Fritz gained the victory in goal with 15 saves.
