At the Library: Organist, Dickinson enthusiast to present programs
Legacy events in March
On March 17 at 3:30 p.m., Alan Moe, a local organist and owner of Moe Pipe Organ Company, will present an organ concert at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wadena. Moe recently updated the Schlicker organ at Immanuel with new casework and new and vintage ranks. He is adept at using all features of the organ.
Rhoda Jackson will take a step back in time and present a short program 10 a.m. March 19 at the Wadena City Library. Blending poetry and prose in a theatrical setting, Jackson hopes to illustrate Emily Dickinson's wit and tenacity. She has spent hours immersed in biographies and volumes of Dickinson's letters, and presents in costume as Dickinson was typically dressed, taking the audience back in time into a writer's mind.
These events are free to the public.
Snow time to read
It's not just the children who get a chance to participate in reading programs. The winter reading program for adults continues until March 31. Adult readers can sign in at the library in order to participate and receive a gift pen. Each time five books are read by a participant, the list may be turned in at the library for a chance at a prize. There is no limit to how many lists one may submit.
"A Week in Winter" by Maeve Binchy - Stoneybridge is a small town on the west coast of Ireland where all the families know one another. When Chicky Starr decides to take an old, decaying mansion set high on the cliffs overlooking the windswept Atlantic Ocean and turn it into a restful place for a holiday by the sea, everyone thinks she is crazy. Helped by Rigger (a bad boy turned good who is handy around the house) and Orla, her niece (a whiz at business), Chicky is finally ready to welcome the first guests to Stone House's big warm kitchen, log fires and understated, elegant bedrooms.
John, the American movie star, thinks he has arrived incognito. Winnie and Lillian are forced into taking a holiday together. Nicola and Henry, husband and wife, have been shaken by seeing too much death practicing medicine. Anders hates his father's business, but has a real talent for music. Miss Nell Howe, a retired schoolteacher, criticizes everything and leaves a day early, much to everyone's relief. The Walls are disappointed to have won this second-prize holiday in a contest where first prize was Paris. And Freda, the librarian, is afraid of her own psychic visions.
Sharing a week with this unlikely cast of characters is pure joy, full of Maeve's trademark warmth and humor. Once again, she embraces readers with her grand storytelling.
"Rosa's Land" by Gilbert Morris - Join Lafayette Riordan as he chases his dream of becoming a Wild West marshal. Young Faye longs for an adventurous life protecting the frontier alongside Judge Isaac Parker's famous marshals. But his upbringing has left him more prepared for a life as a scholar and artist.
When faced with the opportunity to realize his dream, can he summon the courage to hunt down the outlaws? Or will one headstrong female rancher capture his heart first?
